Django Unchained (2013) Prologue

Before I brave the arctic conditions and traipse hopelessly into the bleak white distance I thought it best to set the context for the biggest film of the year thus far, Quentin Tarantino’s controversially violent Django Unchained. Lets get this now famous exchange out of the way shall we, I wonder if QT’s movie will be more violent that it’s inspirational body count?;

I manged to check out one of the unrelated sequels which merely took the name Django despite having nothing to do with the character or setting of the original, here’s major Spaghetti Western fan Alex Cox waxing lyrical on the genre and the unusual Django Kill;

I couldn’t face revisiting much of Tarantino’s patchy oeuvre but I did rewatch Jackie Brown  which remains his most proficient film, he looks like he’s attempting to outgun one of his core inspirations with his new picture so lets just remind ourselves of the true genius of the genre shall we?;

Finally here is a taste of one of the cruellest and most devastating of Westerns, of course it’s Il Grande Silenzio which has one of the most notorious finales in cinema history, odd to see Jean-Louis Trintignant as the mute in the film as he of course is one of the stars of Amour which  stormed the citadels of world cinema last year and is up for a number of Oscars;

In other news Sundance is up and running, as usual some interesting material is leaking out, this in particular sounds intriguing….
