BFI Hitchcock Season – Menagerie I

Alongside the film reviews I thought it best to collect some miscellaneous interviews, articles, montages and associated materials to support the movie coverage, a menagerie of details if you will to further illustrate the portly man’s life and dedication to all things cinema. In a terrific article in last months Sight & Sound  none other than Guillermo Del Toro made the peerless observation that Hitchcock could be considered the first ‘multi-media’ director, as his work and stature eclipsed the silver screen, moving into radio plays and periodicals, cheap dime store mystery books and most famously television, as the Alfred Hitchcock Presents  series ran from 1955 – 1962 with no less than 271 episodes of suspense and murder;

This made me laugh, particularly the ‘ Are you a gentleman?’…..’ sometimes’…quip;

There are plenty of interviews floating around the web of course, Hitchcock wasn’t exactly a Malick or Kubrick shrinkng violet who disliked entering the media maelstrom to promote themselves and their work, this is a quite rare 1972 US TV item that was only recently unearthed;

And finally let’s get the obvious out of the way, here is all the cameos, all together, every screening I’ve attended so far has prompted some scattered chuckles and approving murmurs when Hitch appeared on-screen, he has introduced quite a meme;

I’m off to another screening this evening, after that things will stutter until next weekend, and in the interim I’m plagued with decisions – Brave? The Expendables 2? The Bourne Legacy?  This tail end of summer season offers little interest I have to say….
